Of Unexpected Meetings, Pleasentries, and Loss
ContentWhat started out as a typical day at the ranch turned into one of unexpected surprises. For the first time in almost eleven years, i met one of Dale's siblings, one of his sisters in fact! Haha, well they didn't outright let on their blood relation, i had to figure it out (soon followed by my mom who was like "oh! wait! you're his sister!" ). I thought it was just the coolest thing to see them together, Dale being the older "big" brother who, as i found out, had his sister convinced for a year when she was little that she was adopted. She's as into horses as he is, which only added to the awesomeness of it. Anyway, i thought it was fun to meet her :biggrin:
I feel compelled to put a note here too about Thunders Rose. Went on a ride with her again today, trying a new bit. She did wonderfully, but half of the time we just stood there, me leaning forward on her neck and resting, her standing at attention, tail arched, looking around with her big intelligent eyes. It felt like i'd been transported back in time to when the Bedouins travelled on their trusted war mares, depending on each other for survival and comfort. TRose is the kind of mare that sends you back in time like that all the time, and gives the kind of ride that you can just loose yourself on and hope, dream, and let those worries melt away until you're absolutely floating. Yes, when it comes to my horses, i'm a die hard romantic. Ignore my ramblings.
And after weeks of dealing with my own grief and letting myself slip into mind numbing limbo until i can write about this, i must let on to why i've been horribly inactive since what seems like forever. David, one of my closest jockey friends who i've known since i was little, gave me a great many riding tips and rode one of Dale's grey thoroughbred mares to many wins, was killed. He'd been retired from being a jockey for several years and took up working the gate in the afternoon. After the bell had run for the second thoroughbred race on the card that day, David hitched a ride on the farthest gate hole from the tractor that would move it out of the way. Those who watched the camera said it looked like he'd dropped his pamphlet and was reaching down to pick it up just as the tractor picked up speed. The far end of the gate has a whip-like effect when moved, and turns very quickly, so it struck and ran over David as he fell, crushing him in front of hundreds of fans who attended the fair. He died several hours later at the hospital, by then the race day was in full swing, and by then no one was there to watch them.
